General information
Organisation
The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.
Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.
The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Speciation and migration of organically bound tritium in terrestrial ecosystems

Job description
Tritium exists in the ecosystem in two forms.
Tissue Free Water Tritium (TFWT) is characterized by rapid exchange dynamics with body water, whereas Organically Bound Tritium (OBT) exhibits more prolonged retention in biological tissues. This distinction gives OBT specific radiobiological properties—notably an increased potential for internal exposure due to its longer biological half-life and its incorporation into stable organic compounds. Consequently, OBT is considered a key parameter in assessing the radiological impact of tritium releases from nuclear facilities.
Characterizing OBT in the environment presents a major scientific and methodological challenge. The choice of environmental compartment under study—whether soil, vegetation, or sediment—is crucial, as each matrix possesses distinct capacities for tritium incorporation, transformation, and retention. The distinction between 'bioaccumulators' and 'bioindicators,' along with their associated ecophysiological processes, directly influences measured concentrations and their representativeness. This variability—which remains difficult to quantify robustly—introduces significant uncertainties into data interpretation and, by extension, into the overall assessment of tritium's environmental impact. In this context, gaining a better understanding of the mechanisms governing OBT formation and distribution across various environmental compartments is essential for improving the relevance of monitoring approaches and enhancing the reliability of radiological assessments.
The mechanisms governing tritium incorporation into organic matter and its distribution among the various fractions of living matter remain imperfectly understood. This lack of knowledge poses a significant limitation for predicting ecotoxicological behavior and internal exposure doses, particularly regarding biota and complex environmental compartments.
