General information

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Job description

This study is part of the context of optimization of the compaction stage during the industrial manufacture of UO2 fuel. This subject of pressing powder for the manufacture of compacts is frequently encountered in many industrial fields (pharmaceutical, food processing, metallurgy and construction materials in particular). In this context, the objective of this study concerns the acquisition and interpretation of experimental data relating to the pressing of UO2 powder with the aim to model this step.
This thesis will combine experimentation and modeling with a view to, on one hand, predict the characteristics of the compacts obtained as a function of material and process parameters and, on the other hand, validate finite element simulations based on a porous elastoplastic description of the powders. The student will use and develop experimental methods and will extend and validate the scientific computing programs of the Department of Fuels Studies (IRESNE Institute, CEA-Cadarache). Thus, following this study carried out in collaboration with an industrial partner, the doctoral candidate will leverage their results through publications and participation in conferences and will have gained strong skills and expertise in the field of granular materials and compaction. These skills are sought after and valuable in a wide range of industrial sectors that utilize powders and pellets and face similar challenges, including pharmaceuticals, agri-food, metallurgy, and construction materials, among others. The candidate must hold or be in the process of obtaining a Master's degree in Solid Mechanics or in Materials Science.
