General information

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Job description

The scattering of vector bosons is a fundamental prediction of the Standard Model, closely linked to the Higgs mechanism. The study of this process at the TeV scale tests the unique role of the Higgs boson in generating the masses of the W and Z bosons. The LHC, the only accelerator in the world capable of reaching the necessary energies, plays a vital role in this field, and its results will define the state of the art in this area of research for the foreseeable future.
The vector boson scattering process, pp -> VV+jj+X, where V=W,Z, is characterized by the presence in the final state of leptons from the decay of the W or Z, and of high-energy jets in the forward region of the detector. At the LHC, the scattering processes WW, WZ and ZZ have been studied with Run 2 data. The next step for the community in this field is to refine the signal visibility through improved event selections, better background rejection, and the larger samples collected in Run 3. The predictions of the Standard Model can then be confronted with the results of the data analysis, and the presence of new physics in these interactions can be tested. The expected results represent a significant improvement in measurement accuracy and provide excellent preparation for the operation of the HL-LHC.
