General information

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Metamaterial for Miniature Antenna

Job description

Research at CEA-Leti has highlighted the need for miniaturised antennas as a significant factor in promoting them to the scientific and industrial communities. Among the many types of antenna available, a number are designed to use materials that can be artificially manipulated to provide RF characteristics to the immediate surrounding environment (metamaterials). These materials can be used to improve the radiation efficiency and bandwidth of miniature antennas.
Thanks to the most recent research on the loading of antennae with magneto-dielectric materials, this PhD thesis investigates an alternative approach based on metamaterials that could offer new technological and eco-friendly perspectives.
With the help of the approaches identified, an extremely varied range of applications and frequency bands can be covered, with potential applications both in the low HF and V/UHF bands (defence, naval, avionics and space) and in much higher frequency bands (5G/6G/millimetre).
It will also be possible to analyse the environmental impact of the solutions envisaged, using a life cycle analysis, for example.
The research work will include bibliographic studies, development of physical models, both analytical and digital (3D electromagnetic simulation), and experimental phases concerning materials and their use in antenna systems.
With the help of researchers in the field of microwaves and antenna systems, you will work at CEA Grenoble in a laboratory equipped with antenna simulation and characterization tools at the best world level (http://www.leti-cea .fr/cea-tech/leti/Pages/recherche-applie/plateformes/plateforme-telecommunications.aspx).
